Children and AIDS
Aidsfonds (previously STOP AIDS NOW!) supports children who are affected by HIV and AIDS. We reduce family poverty, facilitate access to care, and improve education opportunities for these children and their families.
'Children affected by HIV and AIDS' are girls and boys under the age of 18 who in one way or another are affected by the virus, including children who lost one or both parents to AIDS and children who have HIV. Aidsfonds (previously STOP AIDS NOW!) is worried that their well-being, development, and lives are threatened, and aims to give them a new future. We believe that the best way to reach these children is through their families and communities. As many HIV affected families face extreme poverty, a comprehensive approach of economic and social empowerment is most effective. We, therefore, strengthen the national plans of action for orphans and vulnerable children and national (draft) policies on social protection of African countries.
A recent research demonstrates that the following four key lines of action will deliver better results for children who are affected by HIV and AIDS:
- Provide support for children to and through their families;
- Strengthen community support for families;
- Reduce family poverty through social protection; and
- Deliver integrated family-centred services regarding health care, education, and social welfare.
Aidsfonds (previously STOP AIDS NOW!) works along these lines of action, and collaborates with local civil society organisations and governments. Thus, initiatives will be owned by the people and will be context-specific. Currently, we focus on social protection and social cash transfers, and from 2013 onwards we will also focus on increasing access to treatment for children.
Strengthening the Social Cash Transfer Programme in Malawi
In Malawi, civil society organisations strengthened the government-led Social Cash Transfer Programme, in two pilot projects. They will be scaled up to seven districts. Aidsfonds (previously STOP AIDS NOW!) supports this initiative.
Lobby and Information Exchange in Networks
Aidsfonds (previously STOP AIDS NOW!) participates in the Dutch CABA Working group, the Coalition for Children Affected by AIDS, and the Better Care Network, to jointly lobby, exchange information, and build expertise.
Psychosocial Support Strengthening in Malawi
Aidsfonds (previously STOP AIDS NOW!), jointly with local organisations, increases the understanding and use of the Psychosocial Support Source Book for Vulnerable Children in Malawi by training service providers. The Source Book is an effective tool to strengthen the psychosocial support of children affected by HIV and AIDS.
Strengthening support mechanisms in communities to cope with the growing number of OVC in times of HIV and AIDS (2007-2010)
The aim of the project was to support organisations in Malawi in linking and learning and to develop innovative strategies to improve the well-being of orphans and vulnerable children.
Making a Choice for Children in South Africa (2004-2009)
The aim of the project was to strengthen the response of South African counterpart organisations to the needs of orphans and vulnerable children.
Towards an AIDS free generation in Uganda
In Uganda 193,500 children under 14 years old are estimated to be living with HIV. More than half of these children are not yet on care. 43 infants continue to be born with HIV every day. This has to change! This program aims to reduce the number of new HIV infections among infants and to increase the number of HIV-positive children on treatment in 5 districts in Uganda.
