Facts about children affected by HIV and AIDS

The HIV and AIDS pandemic has serious consequences for children and their families all over the world. In 2011, about 3.4 million children under the age of 15 and 4.9 million young people aged 15-24 were infected with HIV. Every day, more than 630 children under 15 die of an HIV associated cause. Yet, only 28% of HIV infected children are receiving treatment. (1+2)

Daily, 1,000 babies are infected with HIV through mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) during pregnancy, during delivery, or through breastfeeding (3), while currently only 57% of an estimated 1.5 million pregnant women living with HIV have access to preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) treatment (4)

Over 16 million children under the age of 15 have lost one or both parents to AIDS, of which over 14 million live in Sub-Saharan Africa (90%) (5). The majority of these children and their families do not receive any kind of support.
