HIV and livelihoods
Aidsfonds (previously STOP AIDS NOW!) supports sustainable livelihoods development initiatives as a strategy to prevent HIV infections and diminish the negative consequences for those affected by HIV and AIDS.
HIV and livelihoods are interconnected. HIV and AIDS affect adults at the peak of their productivity, with 60% of all deaths recorded in sub-Saharan Africa aged between 20 and 49. Thus the capabilities of individuals and communities to secure the necessities of life are undermined. This means loss of income at household level, and decrease of productivity, skills, and knowledge at macro level. The International Labour Organisation estimates that by 2020 the labour force in high prevalence countries will be reduced by 10% to 22%. At the same time, poverty makes populations more vulnerable to HIV, as men and women, for instance, resort to high-risk coping strategies, like transactional sex or migration.
To break the vicious circle of poverty and HIV, Aidsfonds (previously STOP AIDS NOW!) embraces the livelihoods development strategy to prevent new infections and offer a better life to those affected by HIV and AIDS. This approach is based on the understanding that when people are able to secure an income for themselves and their families, they are more able to cope with the various impacts of HIV. To arrive at an optimal HIV response, synergies between HIV specific efforts and poverty reduction initiatives are required. Aidsfonds (previously STOP AIDS NOW!), therefore, promotes collaboration of actors in both fields. We and our partners work on mainstreaming HIV and AIDS in poverty reduction programmes, through advocacy and lobby, innovative projects and programmes, and scaling-up of proven methods.
HIV and Livelihoods Programme in Ethiopia
Aidsfonds (previously STOP AIDS NOW!) supports livelihoods development initiatives for HIV affected children, their families, and communities in Ethiopia.
HIV and Microfinance
Aidsfonds (previously STOP AIDS NOW!) encourages microfinance institutions in Uganda to be active players in addressing the challenges that HIV and AIDS poses to their clients and staff. We support initiatives that mainstream HIV responses in microfinance initiatives.
HIV and Social Protection
Aidsfonds (previously STOP AIDS NOW!) advocates for HIV sensitive social protection systems. Achieving social protection for those people affected by HIV is a critical step towards the realisation of universal access to prevention, treatment, care and support.
Sparked Women project
AIDS is still the leading cause of death for young women. Every year, 390,000 adolescent girls and young women are infected with HIV - more than 1,000 every day. Sparked Women project aims to reduce new HIV infections in women aged 15-24 in Uganda by tackling the high unemployment rates among them.
