Our themes

Aidsfonds (previously STOP AIDS NOW!) envisages a better and expanded AIDS response in developing countries. We contribute to this through three main working methods: ‘Learning by doing’, ‘Sharing knowledge and expertise’ and 'Using local level results to influence international policies and governments'.

Our approach
The main objective of Aidsfonds (previously STOP AIDS NOW!)’s Policy and Programme Development is to contribute to more and better AIDS responses in developing countries. We have operationalized this through three main working methods: ‘Learning by doing’, ‘Sharing knowledge and expertise’ and 'Using local level results to influence international policies and governments'.

Learning by doing on specific thematic areas
Through its programmes, Aidsfonds (previously STOP AIDS NOW!) has built extensive expertise in generating knowledge in  developing countries through a learning by doing approach. The general idea of the learning by  doing approach is to innovate, redefine and integrate new and existing strategies and methods on  specific thematic areas with local counterparts. Once found to be successful, these strategies and methods can be further scaled up through the extensive local counterpart network of the Aidsfonds (previously STOP AIDS NOW!) partners. Aidsfonds (previously STOP AIDS NOW!) often takes on the role of facilitator and initiator in the learning by doing approach.

Sharing knowledge and expertise
In most of its knowledge production Aidsfonds (previously STOP AIDS NOW!) engages in collaboration with counterparts and other actors in ‘the field’ through its learning by doing approach (see above). Yet a considerable number of promising practices that can be learned from already exist, at the level of Aidsfonds (previously STOP AIDS NOW!) partners, counterparts abroad and the international community. Aidsfonds (previously STOP AIDS NOW!) enriches the understanding and reflection of these practices through expert meetings, debates, roundtable discussions and in informal context. The objective is that Aidsfonds (previously STOP AIDS NOW!) and its partners have better insight and access to trends and gaps in the international AIDS response in developing countries.

Using local level results to influence international policies and governments
Aidsfonds (previously STOP AIDS NOW!) widely distributes the knowledge gained in long-term projects, and feeds international policy makers with the local-level findings. The Stop AIDS Alliance – a joint initiative of the HIV/AIDS Alliance and Aidsfonds (previously STOP AIDS NOW!) – aims to keep HIV high on the global agenda. We, therefore, engage with EU and US policy makers, EU Institutions, UN agencies, and others.

The thematic areas for 2011-2015 are:

    Prevention for youth

    SRHR and HIV

Aidsfonds (previously STOP AIDS NOW!) links HIV and sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), thus bringing together work on the issues at various levels, such as policy, advocacy, programming, and operations. Integration of operations includes providing HIV related services – such as testing, prevention, treatment, care, and support – and referrals for these in the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) context and vice versa.

    The MaxART programme

Swaziland, with the highest HIV prevalence in the world, has successfully scaled up HIV testing and treatment. In the past few years, the country achieved near-nationwide access to antiretroviral therapy. Among many interventions leading to this success is the Maximizing ART for Better Health and Zero New HIV Infections (MaxART) programme.
