Position Statement

Aidsfonds (previously STOP AIDS NOW!) developed a Position Statement on the quality of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) education and HIV prevention for youth. We feel that HIV prevention policies and programmes should be more evidence-informed.

Young people living with HIV

Significant progress has been made in the areas of sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) education and HIV prevention for youth. But still 40% of all new HIV infections occur among young people aged 15 to 24 and about 2,400 young people get infected every day. Yet, only 34% of young people have accurate knowledge of HIV and most of them have only limited access to good quality SRHR programmes that provide the information and skills, services and commodities they need to protect themselves. In some countries, laws and policies exclude young people from sexual health care and HIV-related services, such as HIV testing, condom provision and age-appropriate sex and HIV education.

Our concern

Plenty of information is available on what makes programmes effective, but it is not widely used. Aidsfonds (previously STOP AIDS NOW!) is concerned about the fact that evidence-informed prevention policies and programmes are not common practice. We feel that many programmes and policies could more adequately integrate evidence-informed information, address relevant behaviour determinants, be consistent in messaging, and use a mix of messages. There is also a need for more research on behaviour change programmes to clearly determine and learn from the effect of programmes on the lives of the young people affected.

Position statement

In 2012, Aidsfonds (previously STOP AIDS NOW!) developed a Position Statement on the quality of SRHR education and HIV prevention for youth. It describes the key criteria for successful and quality programmes and policies and provides specific recommendations. Aidsfonds (previously STOP AIDS NOW!) implements activities in accordance with this Position Statement. Moreover, we share this position, for instance, during conferences and through our involvement in the UNAIDS Interagency Task Team on HIV and Young People.
